How to survive a 5000 km road trip on the ketogenic diet?

If you follow a ketogenic diet, a 5000 km road trip from Munich to Sicily (and back), in almost torrential heat (thanks Dad for driving!), without being able to freely enjoy ice cream, fresh fruit, or those beautiful trendy colorful drinks, is anything but simple and can throw both your body (and your mind) a little off balance. So, what to do? Don’t panic! Here’s a survival guide.

Apartment or hotel?

To have better control over your diet, I’d suggest choosing an apartment-style accommodation rather than a hotel, preferably with a kitchen and a fridge (ideally with a freezer). This allows you to be more independent with your meal prep as if you were at home, while still being able to enjoy local delicacies – but combined with your ketogenic kit. For example, for breakfast I could get Sicilian cannoli or fresh brioche with cream from a bakery, then mix the ricotta or cream with my keto chocolate and pancakes to reach a decent ketogenic ratio (a little indulgence to start the day off right). These creative mixes are definitely easier to make in an apartment than in the breakfast room of a 5-star luxury hotel 😊.

Cooler bag or portable fridge?

Even though it’s easier to bring along by car than by plane, a cooler bag is a must-have, especially for a summer in southern Italy, where temperatures can reach 40°C. They come in large or small sizes, colorful, or with beachy patterns. For the pros (and anxious parents): a USB-rechargeable or car-plug portable fridge. Food and drinks always fresh with no surprises – though yes, a bit bulkier and harder to match with your beautiful summer pareo…

Fluids (non-Newtonian).

Greek yogurt (10% fat) is always a safe bet: keto-friendly and delicious. To add some color and variety, you can buy zero-calorie syrups – my favorites are cherry and raspberry. Zero drinks galore: Coke Zero, iced tea Zero, peach and lemon – you can now find them almost everywhere at the beach. With ice and lemon, please! Note: needless to say, oil is an inseparable travel companion, so don’t even think about “forgetting” it (trust me when I say it’s really not a good idea – speaking from experience…).

Rechargeable portable blender

This is the real game-changer. Keto milk is a great start to the day, but it’s tricky to make when you’re out. To solve that, bring a portable blender. It’s small, fits easily in a beach bag or backpack, uses the same charger as your phone, and with one charge it lasts the whole beach day. Secret recipe: go to a bar, ask for some ice cubes (yes, blend them – but small ones), add zero syrup, a little grapeseed oil (flavorless), a slice of your favorite fruit, and… voilà, granita! Variation with Greek yogurt or keto milk = a creamy fruit milkshake, right on your sunbed.

Menu check

Last but definitely not least: something that seems obvious but can make all the difference – check the restaurant menu and book in advance. When you’re going to totally unfamiliar places, this can really save you: you don’t want to wait in line at a trendy spot only to find out they only serve pizza and pasta, right? 1. Check the menu. 2. Book online. 3. Take a spoonful of oil before going out. Night-out guaranteed!

These are all my tricks to survive traveling on the ketogenic diet! I hope they’ll be helpful. Until next time!
